Handam pens are made from the stems of selected, old forest ferns (Gleichenia linearis). The fibers are very dense, solid, smooth, and have high flexibility, making them resistant to wear, crack, or bluntness even when rubbed against paper for a long time. The natural pores on the inside of the stem are able to store ink well, ensuring a smooth, constant flow of ink to the paper surface, and producing very clean, thick and thin strokes.
When you hold the handam wooden blade, you feel an ergonomic writing instrument with an ideal length of 15–25 cm and a comfortable diameter of 5–10 mm. The tip of the pen (nib) is cut obliquely with a typical angle of 35 to 45 degrees—a traditional customized angle precision specifically tailored to the perfection of each anatomical character of the letters in the art of Islamic calligraphy.
